Hyundai is developing smart fingerprint technology to allow drivers to unlock and start a vehicle without using keys.
Hyundai is set to debut the new technology on its 2019 Santa Fe SUV. It will enable multiple users to have access to a vehicle without the need to pass on a key.
Fingerprint sensors on the door handles and ignition can unlock and start the car. On recognition of the fingerprint, the car can even provide a customised driving environment, automatically adjusting seating positions, connected car features and side-view mirror angles, according to the driver.
The new technology is said to be five times more secure than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys, with a 1 in 50,000 chance of misrecognising another person’s fingerprint as the owner’s. Real-time learning of fingerprints means the technology will improve its success rate the more times it is used.
President and head of research and development at Hyundai, Albert Biermann, said “In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences.
“This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer.”
